Why Am I Conducting a Survey?

Three checked (ticked) boxes

Getting the 2013 Band Music Survey ready to debut has been one of the most involved projects which I've ever set for myself.

It has consumed dozens of hours and honestly, I've grown rather weary during the final stages of development and testing. Yet I've stuck with it, not only because I think it will be helpful in establishing new working relationships with bands and directors, but because I believe in the value of the research it represents. Aside from a few "profile" questions, it mainly covers topics for which I could not think of any other source to consult. For instance:

  • When and why do people really choose their music?
  • What do performers think about working with self-published composers other than via commissions?
  • How do people view the notion of downloading sheet music as digital content?

So I approach the primary source—you! Directors, band members, music librarians, family and other supporters... I hope you will provide your insights and expertise to make this a truly illuminating collection of data.

And I sincerely hope you'll enjoy a free copy of Linlithgow Chorale to boot.
